JPEG XL support by browser
| Browser | Status in October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Chrome | Supported from version 155, built in and switched on by default. |
| Microsoft Edge | Built on Chromium. Run the test above to see whether your version shows JPEG XL. |
| Safari | Supported from version 17 for still images. Animation and progressive loading are not supported. |
| Firefox | Experimental. From version 152 you can switch it on in Settings under Firefox Labs. |
Your browser reports itself as:
What if your browser says no?
You can still open and convert .jxl files with LocalJXL. It includes its own JPEG XL decoder, so the JXL to JPG and JXL to PNG converters work even in browsers without built-in support.
Why JPEG XL support matters now
Google removed JPEG XL from Chrome in 2022, then changed course. A new decoder written in Rust landed in Chromium in 2026, and Chrome 155 switched it on for everyone. With Chrome and Safari both able to show the format, .jxl files are likely to become more common in downloads and on websites.
