Why a .jxl file might not open
JPEG XL is a newer image format that keeps photos sharp at much smaller file sizes. Support is still arriving: Chrome added built-in JPEG XL support in version 155 in October 2026, and Safari has shown JPEG XL images since version 17. Many other places, including older browsers, photo apps, social networks, chat apps and email, still expect a JPG.
Windows 11 also needs the JPEG XL extension from the Microsoft Store before it can show .jxl files. Converting to JPG is the quickest way to make an image work everywhere.
How your photos stay private
Most online converters upload your file to a server, convert it there and send it back. LocalJXL works differently: when this page loads, it brings a JPEG XL decoder into your browser, and every conversion happens on your own computer or phone.
You can check this yourself. Once the page says it is ready, disconnect from the internet and convert a file. It still works, because nothing needs to leave your device.
How to convert JXL to JPG
- Drop one or more .jxl files onto the box above, or select choose files. On a phone, tap the box.
- Keep JPG selected, or pick PNG or WebP. Quality 92 suits most photos.
- Select Download next to each file, or download them all as a zip.
Questions
Is LocalJXL free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The only limit is how much memory your device has.
Will the JPG lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so a little detail is always lost. At the default quality of 92 the difference is very hard to see. If you need an exact copy, choose PNG instead; the file will be larger.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like. They are converted one after another, and you can download them together as a zip.
Is photo metadata such as EXIF kept?
Not in this version. The converted image contains only the picture, without camera details or location data.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas turn white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep them.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, in current versions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Very large images can exceed what a phone browser can handle; a desktop browser copes better with those.
